Beginner's Guide To Motorcycle Huggers

Some motorcycles come with huggers installed as standard and while that is a welcomed bonus, it is not always the case and that is where aftermarket huggers make a name for themselves.

For many, having or adding a hugger to their motorbike is second nature, but someone who is new to the world of motorcycles may not even have the foggiest idea. That is about to change as this guide endeavours to shed light on the importance of huggers.

What Is A Motorcycle Hugger?

Motorcycle huggers are a form of rear mudguard that has been designed to offer protection for the rear of the motorbike against the spray of dirt, mud and water.

They prevent a buildup from collecting in and around difficult-to-clean areas, such as the shock absorber, exhaust system and rear frame.

Why Do I Need A Hugger?

It is only natural that your motorcycle is going to suffer the pesky spray that comes from the rear wheel and anyone that has been on rides without a hugger before will tell you just how much of a pain it can be to clean the dirty buildup that accumulates in every little orifice.

Especially when riding in the UK, it is inevitable you will face the weather’s nasty side and with that comes an abundance of wet and muddy conditions. Why not do yourself a favour and take preventative action? Huggers are significantly easier to clean in comparison to the exposed components they are protecting.

What’s more, they also look the part, offering an aesthetic upgrade to an otherwise naked area and are often available in black and/or carbon colours that allow you to select the option that best suits your motorbike’s appearance.

What Makes A Great Hugger?

While most huggers would be a welcomed addition to any motorcycle, there are a number of key considerations to be made when choosing one for your bike.

It seems like a case of stating the obvious when advising huggers should be secure but as with most products, you get what you pay for. The cheaper options on the market are often universally fitting and while that may seem appealing at first, unlike the bike-specific options, they have a tendency to wobble or rattle around.

Another feature worth looking out for is a chain guard. Some of the better huggers out there come as one piece with a chain guard included and the beauty of that is it prevents the chain from kicking up oil and chain lubricant.

How To Install A Hugger

While there is no harm in a beginner seeking the professional help of a mechanic when installing a motorcycle hugger, it really is not necessary. Huggers are relatively straightforward to fit as they simply screw to existing mounting points on the motorbike.
