Beginner's Guide To Motorcycle Screen Extenders

A seasoned motorcycle rider will know exactly what a screen extender has to offer and when they may want to employ one, but that does not mean everyone is as clued in.

While there is no doubt motorbike screen extenders have their benefits, they could be completely alien to a beginner. However, we are here to negate such issues, so to help ensure everyone is on the same page, here is a quick guide to screen extenders and what they bring to the table.

What Is A Motorcycle Screen Extender?

Motorcycle screen extenders, also known as screen deflectors, are visors that attach to the top of an existing motorbike screen to add extra height and further protect the rider from the impacts of wind.

Why Do I Need A Screen Extender?

Motorbike screen extenders build on the protection offered by existing screens to ensure an optimal defence against wind and that is just the beginning of their capabilities. Not only do they shield against the wind for a more comfortable ride, they actually go a step further to redirect the airflow away from the rider and use it to the motorcycle’s advantage with increased aerodynamics.

So, screen extenders offer enhancements to aerodynamics, comfort and protection and if that was not enough, they will not break the bank either. Imagine your motorbike’s original screen is too short or you have purchased a new screen before realising it is not tall enough, a screen deflector is a simple way to add that extra height and will weigh in at a fraction of the cost of buying another screen.

While they are a product worth utilising in general, some motorcycle screen extenders are more useful than others and there are some features that are worth looking out for when shopping for a new screen visor.

Firstly, it is important to remain vigilant to how the extender is installed as they will either be available with screws or clips. The ‘screw on’ extenders are more secure but require drilling the screen while the ‘clip on’ options are less secure but can be attached in seconds.

It is also worth noting that there are adjustable screen extenders, such as Puig’s visor 2.0, that are arguably the best options on the market. That is because they allow the rider to adapt them to four different positions with various heights and find the best positioning for them.

How To Install A Screen Extender

Generally speaking, motorcycle screen extenders are straightforward to install and do not require any prior mechanical knowledge to fit.

Although it can differ depending on the manufacturer, many are compatible with both the original motorbike manufacturer’s screens and aftermarket screens and are attached using either clips or screws.
